Proto-Religion?

There are lots of people that make fun of religion. We are respectful of religion in general and consider it an important expression of basic human instincts. The followers of the Abonilox sincerely desire that our religion will evolve over time into a robust and suitable expression of religious faith. That said, we also believe that what we are attempting is a synthetic approximation of a process that normally takes years, sometimes hundreds of years, and only rarely is successful. We are also consciously undermining the traditional path to a new religion which is based on a prophetic cult. There is no prophet of Abonilox except for what we hope will be a collaborative voice of spiritually motivated individuals who practice their new religion quietly and peacefully. We remain anonymous and we ask that all participants remain officially anonymous (in postings) although we hope that someday this faith of ours will leave its nursery and stand on its own.

Welcome to the Aboniblog

Those of us that have been fortunate enough to know the Abonilox all these years are pleased that finally we have been given the opportunity to introduce him to a wider audience. Have you ever wanted to go back in time and actually watch a particular moment in history? Do you wish you could know what really happened at such and such a time? What is historically true? Well, you won’t get any answers here about any of that. But, you could participate in the creation of history as it is unfolding now.

Of course we all do that every day. But what if you could watch a new civilization come into being? To be a “fly on the wall” at the founding of a new and important epoch in human history… We would like to invite you to participate in just such an exercise.

What human achievement has the greatest impact upon the future of society? Technology certainly must be near the top of the list. Human achievement in this area has certainly transformed culture, behavior, comfort, lifespan, health and wealth. Political revolution and development also has had a great influence on the quality of life for the species–both good and bad. Then there is the creative impulse of man. Certainly art making and creative energy has been transformative.

But all these human endeavors fall short of the incredible power and reach of religion in terms of its influence over the human species. And what is more unique about human behavior than the innate desire of all individuals to transcend the earthly bounds that hold us? The thirst for the water of the spirit is unquenchable. Even among the materialists of history–always a tiny minority–the desire to prove that there is not a reason for our existence becomes a morbid preoccupation. And no one can refute them. Faith is a phenomenological tautology that is stubbornly resistant to reason.

The Abonilox is pointing a way to the fountain that will quench that thirst. And reasonable people are the most receptive to His message. Why? Because we do not believe. Faith has eluded us. We suspect it is a relic of our primitive past. We see it as a psychological phenomenon that, though useful, cannot be supported by facts. We are ruthlessly skeptical.

But we cannot eliminate that itch that demands to be scratched. We see the value of faith as real. We accept the need for transcendent values that inform our moral character. We long to submit to an Absolute that is beyond the comprehension of any creature. We desire communion with a creator. We pray with only the slenderest of hopes that our prayers are directed at something real.

Are you one of us? Are you an accident?
